Case Overview

Claiming he would handle the sound at a performance venue, the defendant installed a remotely operated hidden camera in the female performers' changing area and repeatedly filmed their bodies without consent. It was also confirmed that he trespassed to carry out the filming. The defendant initially denied the charges, but ultimately admitted the offenses in the face of a camera screen displaying the words 'remote recording in progress,' the video files, and his own DNA detected on the equipment's components.

Our Strategy

Representing the victims, I secured both a negotiated settlement and severe punishment for the perpetrator. The victims were suffering intense shame and anxiety from the illegal filming (officially “taking photographs or videos by using cameras”), and a simple apology or monetary payment alone could not have made them whole. I therefore pursued clear legal accountability through the criminal trial while steering negotiations toward compensation that would be meaningful from the victims' perspective. The defendant initially denied the offenses, but once the charges were objectively proven through video evidence and DNA analysis, he admitted them. DAEON submitted an opinion brief emphasizing the premeditated and repeated nature of the defendant's conduct, and the court agreed that stern punishment was warranted. When the defense later sought a settlement in hopes of a reduced sentence, DAEON executed a settlement agreement that included a no-contact clause and a penalty provision to protect the victims from secondary harm. We calibrated the settlement amount by weighing the psychological harm, the repeated nature of the offenses, and the scope of the filming, and through negotiation secured the maximum compensation. This was not simply a matter of money; it was a process of restoring the victims' dignity and enforcing the perpetrator's genuine accountability. Settlements in sex crime cases must be handled with the assistance of an attorney, and victims' rights must be protected to the very end. I do my utmost to uphold that principle.
