This case involved repeated sexual molestation that took place in confined spaces during military service. The victims were subjected to physical contact by the defendant multiple times in enclosed spaces such as the shared barracks and the cyber information room, and although they made their refusal clear, the defendant did not stop. After enduring the suffering in silence for a long time, the victims finally found the courage to come forward, while the defendant denied the charges throughout the investigation and trial without any genuine remorse or effort to make amends.

Given the closed nature of the military environment, the victims had suffered for a long time without being able to speak of what happened to them. Sex crimes within the military are structurally easy to cover up, and it is the victims who must fear stigma and secondary harm. Taking these particular circumstances into account, I prepared a legal response designed to ensure the victims' voices would be clearly heard at trial. I organized the evidence and facts to support the credibility of their statements, focusing on the fact that the defendant's molestation was neither a one-time nor an accidental contact, and that it continued despite the victims' repeated refusals. In particular, I framed the opinion brief around the defendant's prior record for similar offenses, his lack of remorse, and the consistency among the victims' statements so that the court could impose a prison sentence. Just as the victims' call for severe punishment was accepted, in this case too I approached the matter from the victims' perspective so that genuine justice, not mere punishment, would be achieved. Settlements in sex crime cases must be approached strategically. Attempting a settlement on one's own, without an attorney, can result in a difference of tens of millions of won and can also affect the criminal verdict.
